According to foreign media reports, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has selected 14 companies from hundreds of enterprises, all of which are interested in their lithium-ion battery technology.
Vikram Space Center (VSSC) is a subsidiary of ISRO. S. Somanath, an executive of the organization, said that ISRO has transferred lithium-ion technology to BHEL for mass production of space grade lithium-ion batteries. In June of this year, the agency announced its decision to hand over its lithium-ion battery technology to India Heavy Industries on a non-exclusive basis for use in automotive manufacturing.
The institution stated that this measure will accelerate the development of the electric vehicle industry. VSSC is located in Kerala, India. It plans to hand over lithium-ion battery cell technology to successful Indian enterprises and start-ups, but it is based on non exclusiveness to build mass production facilities in India to produce battery cells of different sizes, capacities and energy densities, aiming to meet the application requirements of such energy storage equipment.
ISRO can produce lithium-ion battery cells of different sizes and capacities (1.5-100 A). At present, lithium-ion batteries have become the most mainstream battery system, which can be seen in mobile phones, laptops, cameras, and other portable consumer products.
Recently, battery technology has made progress again, providing assistance for the research and development of electric and hybrid vehicles.
